Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Choosing the right firewood can help maintain a cleaner chimney flue and reduce buildup.
Best Firewood Types
Hardwoods like oak, maple, and ash burn hotter and cleaner than softwoods, producing less creosote, a flammable byproduct that accumulates in your chimney.
Using seasoned (or dried) wood further reduces creosote buildup. Seasoned wood has lower moisture content, resulting in a hotter, cleaner burn.
Avoiding Softwoods and Green Wood
Softwoods such as pine and fir should be burned sparingly as they produce more smoke and creosote, posing a higher risk of chimney fires.
Green or unseasoned wood is another culprit as it contains high moisture, causes excessive smoke, and contributes to more creosote. Allow wood to dry for at least six months before burning.
Proper Storage Methods
To keep your firewood dry and ready for use, store it off the ground and covered with a tarp, leaving the sides open for airflow.
Stack wood away from the house to prevent pest issues, and ensure it's easily accessible during winter months for convenience.
